Why We Forget to Clock In (Even Though We Remember Everything Else)

Write the plan as "when X, then Y"

"I should remember to clock in" is not a plan, it is a hope. "When I open the office door, I clock in" is a plan. The difference is that the second version gives your brain a fixed, physical event to watch for, rather than asking it to track an abstract time of day.

  1. Pick a trigger that happens every single day without exception — opening a door, sitting down, opening your laptop lid.
  2. Write the full sentence: "When I [trigger], I [clock in]." Say it once out loud or type it into a note. The act of stating it measurably improves follow-through.
  3. Keep the trigger physical, not mental. "When I feel ready" is not a trigger. "When I sit in this chair" is.
  4. Do the same for clocking out. The end of the day has more competing triggers (packing up, chatting), so pick one that reliably happens first, like closing the laptop.

Time-based reminders beat memory-based ones

Implementation intentions help, but they are not perfect — busy mornings, a different door, an unusual start time can all break the chain. The more durable fix is to stop relying on memory at all and let a fixed time do the reminding instead.
